I was trying to decide what to blog about today, and I happened across a book that sounds like it would be the book of my heart if I wrote non-fiction. It's called Sacred Unions, Sacred Passions: Engaging the Mystery of Friendship Between Men and Women, by Dan J. Brennan. It's a positive discussion about non-romantic friendships between men and women--regardless of marital status. The author has self-published the book--I imagine because the subject matter may be too much of a hot-potato for most Christian publishers. But from what I've seen of it so far, it looks very well-written and professionally produced.
The subject of male-female friendship is very close to my heart, and to my husband's heart as well. And yet, especially in the Christian world that we both live in, it's a controversial subject in the extreme. It's so emotionally loaded that most people I know are reluctant to even talk about it, except to say it's bad, it's wrong, and no way could anything good come of it. And yet, from experience I know how rewarding and inspiring such friendships can be. I have believed for quite some time that overcoming this last divide (the one between men and women) is key to finding that true unity and oneness that we in the Christian world claim God offers to all people.
I never dreamed I'd actually ever see a book that addressed male-female friendships from a Christian perspective in a positive light. I can't wait to read what Brennan has to say, and I'll be sure to post a full report when I finish reading it. I would love my readers to take a look at the book for themselves, and then we could talk about it together. In the mean time, check out Dan Brennan's blog and give him some love--this isn't an easy subject to tackle!
